The Legend of Arta's bridge

Many years ago, in Arta, a town in west Greece………

…a lot of people were working to build the bridge

They were working all day long but every night the bridge collapsed

What a waste of time and labour!

One day a bird came and stood before them. It told them that the bridge would be finished only if…

…they sacrificed a person…The head worker’s beloved wife.

He was very sad but he could do no other way.

He sent the bird to find his wife and tell her to come to the bridge.

The beautiful young woman went to the bridge.

She met her husband but he was very sad.

Somebody told her that their wedding ring had fallen into the foundation.

She started looking for it in the foundation.

After a while she asked them to pull her out.Instead,they started to build her in the bridge.

She realized what her destiny would be.She started to curse the people who would pass over the bridge.

Then she remembered that she had a younger brother and the curse could fall on him,too.

She repented of what she had said….

….and took the curse back

The workers finished the bridge…

…..and you can visit it even nowadays.
