E’ importante anche esaminare conattenzione ogni sovrapposizione,riconoscendo le figure sovrapposte equelle sottoposte. Ciò fornisce dati moltoimportanti, comparabili a quelli di unastratigrafia archeologica.

Relating to these necessities the bestmethod is the manual tracing.

In relazione a queste necessità il metodopiù opportuno è quello del rilievo manuale.

Manual tracing over plastic sheets, Valcamonica

This method has been developed andimproved in more than 30 years ofresearch in Valcamonica, which is therichest Alpine and probably Europeanopen air rock art pole.

Questo è il metodo che è stato sviluppato èmigliorato in oltre 30 anni di ricerca inValcamonica, che è il sito più ricco dell’arterupestre alpina e probabilmente europea.

Tracing is done by transparency withthe plastic sheets in direct contact withthe engraved surface.

Il rilievo viene operato per trasparenzacon i fogli a diretto contatto con lasuperficie rocciosa.

The direct contact with the rock surfaceand the manual operating are by far thebest way to recognise figures on theengraved surfaces.

Il contatto diretto con la superficierocciosa e il rilievo manualecostituiscono di gran lunga il modomigliore per riconoscere le figure incise.

Assuming a correct way of operating, weobtain a series of traced plastic sheets(standard dimension are 60 x 80 cm).

Ipotizzando l’esecuzione corretta del rilievo,si ottiene così una serie di fogli di plasticarilevati (dimensioni standard 60 x 80 cm).

The final composition delivers like apuzzle the entire engraved surface.

La composizione finale dei fogli permette diriprodurre come un puzzle l’interasuperficie incisa.

As it is not possible to manage thetracings in the original (1:1) dimension,there is the need to reduce them to asuitable scale.

Each sheet is reduced by photographyor photocopy, and joined with the othersto obtain the complete surface.

Ogni foglio viene ridotto tramite fotografiao fotocopia, e unito agli altri per ottenerela riproduzione completa della superficie.

Traced sheets from Rupe Magna, Valtellina

This work is normally done by manualcutting and gluing. Here for example asector of the Rupe Magna in Valtellina.Rupe Magna surface contains 5454figures in 85 sectors.

E’ un lavoro manuale di ritaglio e diincollaggio. Ecco ad esempio un settoredella Rupe Magna in Valtellina. Sulla RupeMagna sono state contate 5454 figure in85 settori.

For this work Footsteps of Man traced in5 year 780 plastic sheets, then reduced,manually recomposed and integrallypublished in the final book.

Sulla Rupe Magna Le Orme dell’Uomohanno rilevato in 5 anni 780 fogli diplastica, in seguito ricompostimanualmente e pubblicati integralmentenella pubblicazione finale del lavoro.

Another way to accomplish this work isgiven by the graphic software, scanningand auto-tracing the reduced sheets.Here the entire proceeding described insix steps.

Un’altra via è offerta dai programmi digrafica, tramite scansione eautotracciamento dei fogli ridotti. Eccol’intero processo descritto in sei punti.

A particular of the digital tracing of theCavour rock paintings.

1 - The plastic sheets are reduced to25% (1:4) scale each. It means thateach sheet is contained in an A4 paper.This work is normally still done manually,as it is not easy to find an A0 or A1scanner.

1 - I fogli originali sono ridotti al 25%.Cioè ogni foglio originale è contenuto inuna pagina A4. E’ un lavoto questonormalmente manuale, non essendosemplice reperire scanner A0.

The reduced sheet (Valcenischia)

2 - Each reduction is scanned as B/Wbitmap. A 300 DPI resolution is sufficient.This gives a *.TIF or *.BMP or *.PCX filefor each scanned sheet.

2 - Ogni foglio ridotto viene sottoposto ascansione come bitmap in N/N. Si ottienecosì un file *.TIF o analogo per ogni foglioscansito.

Scanning

3 - Each *.TIF file must be “cleaned”, itmeans that we need to detach by at least 2or 3 pixels the figures from the naturalscratches or from other close figures.

3 - Ogni file *.TIF risultato di scansione deveessere “pulito”, cioè vi è la necessità distaccare di almeno 2 o 3 pixel le figure dallefratture naturali o da altre figure contigue.

Working on a picture

The cleaning is possible in most picturemanipulation software (Photoshop,Photopaint, Paintshop). This is the longestworks, and in the case of very intricate rocksurfaces it could take a lot of time.

La pulitura a video è possibile in tutte leapplicazioni di ritocco fotografico(Photoshop, Photopaint, Photoshop). E’ illavoro più lungo, che può impiegare moltotempo nel caso di superfici molto riccamenteincise.

Cleaning

Depending from hardware (mostly RAM) andsoftware (the version of the program)characteristics it possible that auto tracingprograms not allow to overcome somethousands curve nodes for each figure .

A seconda della dotazione HW (RAMperlopiù) e SW (la versione del programma) èpossibile che i programmi di autotracciamentonon permettano di superare alcune migliaia dinodi di curva per ogni singola figura.

In this case there is the need of dividing thefigure (always by pixel manipulation) andreconstructing it after the auto tracing.

In questo caso è necessario dividere la figura(sempre tramite la manipolazione dei pixel) ericostituirla dopo l’autotracciamento.

4 - After the digital cleaning each *.TIF file issubmitted to the auto tracing. The bestsoftware to do it is Corel Trace or FreeHand.

4 - Dopo la pulizia digitale ogni file èsottoposto all’autotracciamento. I programmipiù opportuni sono Corel Trace e FreeHand.

Both programs allow to set preferences. It isimportant to set the best accuracy in orderto obtain the largest number of points foreach figure.

Entrambi i programmi permettono opportunisettaggi. E’ importante configurare ilsettaggio in modo da ottenere il maggiornumero di nodi di curva per ogni figura.

Setting preferences in Corel Trace

The result is an *.EPS file, where theoutline border of the figure is transformed incurve nodes.

Si ottiene così un file *.EPS, nel quale ilcontorno della figura è trasformato in unalinea a nodi di curva.

Autotracing in Corel Trace

Each single figure, even fewcentimetres long, can bear more than1000 curve nodes.

Ogni singola figura, anche di pochicentimetri, può contenere oltre 1000nodi curva.

It means a better definition thanphotogrammetry tracing, which anywayis manually accomplished on themonitor.

Ciò significa una migliore definizionerispetto al tracciamento dafotogrammetria, che viene comunqueeffettuato manualmente sul monitor.

5 - All the *.EPS auto traced files mustbe imported in Corel Draw or Free Hand.

5 - Tutti i file *. Eps di autotracciamentodevono essere importati in Corel Draw oFree Hand.

The auto tracing of each sheet is turnedin the right position and joined withadjacent sheets.

Ogni foglio autotracciato è sistematonella giusta posizione e unito ai fogliadiacenti.

Exactly like moving, cutting and gluingmanually the sheets on a table.

Analogamente a quanto si famanualmente ritagliando e incollando ifogli su di un tavolo.

6 - The final result is the entire tracingof the surface as a drawing and not asa picture file. Each figure and eachnatural crack is now a workable object.

6 - Il risultato finale è il rilievo di tutta lasuperficie come disegno e non come fileimmagine. Ogni figura e ogni rotturanaturale della roccia sono ora diventatioggetti manipolabili.

The final work

In this way there is possibility of bestmanaging the tracing. Here are some ofthe most important features.

E’ così possibile maneggiare nel migliormodo il rilievo finale. Ecco alcune dellecaratteristiche più importanti.

A - Objects. Each figure and each naturalcrack or line or outline border of the rock isnow an object. It means that it is possibleby a click to change colour or linethickness.

A - Oggetti. Ogni figura e ogni fratturanaturale ora sono diventati oggettimanipolabili. E’ così possibile con un clicdel mouse cambiare il colore o ledimensioni.

Changing colors

It is possible to group or join into the samecurve the desired similar objects, like forexample all the natural scratches or all thesame kind figures to define theircharacteristics only once and not each byeach.

Gli oggetti si possono unire o raggruppare,come ad esempio tutte le fratture o tutte lefigure della stessa tipologia in modo dadefinirne gli attributi in gruppo e nonsingolarmente.

B - Scaleability. All the objects arescaleable, it means that they don’t loosedefinition and quality by reducing orenlarging their dimensions

B - Scalabilità. Tutti gli oggetti sonoscalabili, cioè non perdono di definizione edi qualità modificandone le dimensioni.

C - Graphic features. It’s very easy to addframes, text captions, figure numbers,arrows or circles pointing to the desiredobjects.

C - Grafica. E’ molto semplice aggiugereriquadri, didascalie, numeri di figura, frecceo cerchi per sottolineare le parti volute.

D - Managing. The file dimension are muchless heavy than a picture image file. It isfaster to open and to print, not producinghuge PostScript files as normally pictures do.

D - Uso. Le dimensioni del file sono moltominori rispetto a un’immagine fotografica. Ilfile si apre e si stampa più velocemente,senza produrre enormi file Postscript comefanno normalmente in fase di stampa leimmagini fotografiche.

Tiny files

E - Portability. The native Corel andFree Hand graphic files can be easilyexported in quite all graphic formats.

E - Portabilità. I file nativi Corel e FreeHand possono essere facilmenteesportati in quasi tutti i formati piùcomuni.

Exporting

It is possible to export the entire drawing oronly parts of it, also reducing or enlargingreal dimensions. Web transmission is veryeasy, transforming the tracing in a *.GIFfile, normally very light.

E’ possibile esportare l’intero rilievo o partidi esso, modificandone anche ledimensioni. La trasmissioni in rete è moltosemplice, esportanto in formato *.GIF, disolito molto leggero.

F - Publishing. All the doors to publishingare open and better managed, as is possibleto easily produce files for the final output inbooks or scientific publications.

F - Pubblicazione. Tutte le possibilità per lapubblicazione sono disponibili e piùfacilmente maneggiabili, in quanto laproduzione di file per la stampa finale in librio pubblicazioni scientifiche è molto agevole.

Formatting for books

Some of these results can be obtained alsoby working on pictures files by imagingsoftware. But all the previously cited featuresare surely better managed by working withauto traced drawings.

Questi risultati possono essere ottenuti inparte anche lavorando su programmi diritocco fotografico. Ma il tutto è molto piùagevole lavorando con rilievi autotracciati.

A complete “auto tracing” has beenexperienced for the Pera dij Cros (the rockof the crosses) and for some rocks in theSusa Valley, both in Italian western Alps.

Un completo rilievo autotracciato è statosperimentato per la Pera dij Cros (le rocciadelle croci) e per alcune rocce in Val di Susa,entrambi nelle Alpi Occidentali.

Direct contact tracings have been made bythe archaeologists of the Footsteps of Manarchaeological co-operative. The work hasbeen conducted under the enchargment ofthe Piedmont ArchaeologicalSuperintendence.

Il rilievo a contatto è stato operato da LeOrme dell’Uomo. Il lavoro è stato condottosu incarico della SoprintendenzaArcheologica del Piemonte.

Pera dij Cros digital tracing

In the Pera dij Cros case 24 sheets has beenreduced, scanned, auto traced andcomposed in Corel Draw.

Nel caso della Pera dij Cros sono stati ridotti,scansiti, autotracciati e composti 24 fogli.

In this way it has been possible to add thesections of the engravings, to colour in greythe part of the surface which was undergroundbefore the discovering of the rock, to underlineby grey tonalities the different kinds ofengravings (human figures and crosses).

Così è stato possibile aggiungere le sezionidelle incisioni, colorare in grigio la parte dellasuperficie sotterrata prima della scoperta,sottolineare con differenti tonalità le diversetipologie delle figure (croci e antropomorfi).

The final digital tracing has been stored in 2versions, adding in one of them thecataloguing number of each figure.

Il rilievo finale è stato salvato in 2 versionidiverse, aggiungendo nella seconda i numeridi catalogo delle figure.

The same work has been experienced inthe Mompantero and in the Novalesa areas,both in the Susa Valley, where 18 rocks hasbeen digitally auto-traced.

Lo stesso lavoro è stato condotto nell’area diMompantero e di Novalesa, entrambe in Valdi Susa e Valcenischia, dove sono stateautotracciate 18 rocce.

Also in this case different kinds ofengravings has been outlined by differentgrey scales.

Anche in questo caso è stata utilizzata lascala di grigio per sottolineare le diversetipologie di figure.

Also in the Albedosa valley, again byenchargment of Piedmont ArchaeologicalSuperintendence, 10 rocks have been auto-traced. In this case deepness has beenmarked in cup-marks.

Anche nell’area dell’Albedosa, ancora suincarico della Soprintendenza Archeologicadel Piemonte, sono state autotracciate 10rocce. La profondità delle coppelle è stataindicata tramite le curve di livello.

In conclusion the digital auto tracing methodreveals to be a powerful tool in Rock Artrecording.

L’autotracciamento digitale si rivela inconclusione uno strumento potente nelrilievo dell’arte rupestre

It is more appropriate in case of not heavilyfilled and superimposed engraved surfaces,where the work of digital cleaning isparticularly long, anyway possible.

E’ più appropriato nel caso di superfici nontroppo fittamente incise, dove il lavoro dipulizia digitale delle scansioni èparticolarmente lungo, ma comunquepossibile

The archaeological and scientific accuracy ofthe digital autotracing depends obviously bythe quality of the original manual tracing, whileits software management qualities areundoubtful.

L’ accuratezza archeologica e scientificadell’autotracciamento digitale dipendeovviamente dal rilievo manuale originale. Lesue qualità di maneggiabilità sono indubbie.
