UC Davis alum ANGEL MARTINEZ rsquo77

To many people UGG Australia Teva Sanuk Mozo Ahnu and Tsubo are all well-known

footwear brands What is less well-known is that it is Aggie alum ANGEL MARTINEZ rsquo77 who is the president and chief executive officer at Deckers Outdoor Corporation the company that designs manufactures and markets these shoes that are all meant for high-performance outdoor sports and recreational activities Before this Angel was the chief marketing officer for another well-known brand Reebok International

From a young age Angel recalls being competitive He focused this drive to compete in the sport of running ldquoRunning was fantasticrdquo Angel says ldquoYou could improve directly and proportionately to how much work you put inrdquo It was a combination of his love of running and the cross-country program at UC Davis that led him to the Aggie campus As he continued with running and staying active in the Aggie Running Club he realized that there was a direct relationship between the number of injuries he was getting and the kind of shoes he was wearing This realization transformed Angelrsquos love of running into a love for

marketing and designing running shoes ldquoWho would have thought a passion for running would lead to a career in footwear But it did because it was my passionrdquo Angel states

While at UC Davis Angel majored in rhetoric Once he discovered his enthusiasm for marketing shoes he did not let all that he learned from his major go to waste ldquoI didnrsquot attend UC Davis to get a job My goal was to learn how to think and develop intellectual disciplinerdquo he says For Angel rhetoric turned out to be the perfect major He has found that marketing is the rhetoric of the business world honing the ability to influence people through communications whether it is oral written or through images and symbols

Angel no longer runs for competition but he still keeps himself plenty busy

After retiring once he found that the retired life was not what he wanted ldquoI got a break Thatrsquos what I needed Then I realized that I loved what I was doingrdquo he recalls Now back at what he loves doing Angel has no plans to slow down Although he does not often have the chance

to make it back to campus he never forgets the impact UC Davis had on his life ldquoIrsquove always been incredibly proud of being an Aggierdquo he says ldquoFor me I canrsquot think of a better institution in the worldrdquo

GERMANY WASHINGTON DC and NEW YORK NEW YORK The events ranged from lunches at the US Ambassadorrsquos Residence in Baguio to a tour and winetasting at an Aggie-owned and operated winery (Loudoun Valley Vineyards in Waterford VA)

In conjunction with the University of California London a number of UC Davis alumni joined with other UC alumni to enjoy a mixer at Wimbledon Race Track in LONDON on February 25 and a night of camaraderie and conversation over Mexican food at Mestizo on April 18 The Picnic Day around the World event celebrated in MUNICH GERMANY was also open to all UC Davis alumni in Europe and the United Kingdom

ldquoSuccess in any business starts with passionrdquo Janis states It is for this reason that Janis decided to initially pursue the financial services business ldquoI absolutely love that I can help people make the right decisions about their moneyrdquo she explains With Morgan Stanley Smith Barney she has many responsibilities including upholding quality assurance for all transactions and managing client development and wealth advisory services As founder of Andis Wines she directs the operational and philanthropic activities contributes to the marketing work and sits on the tastingblending panel ldquoOur goal at Andis Wines is to build the brand by consistently making the most delicious winesrdquo she says ldquoAs a

in 2005 the Charles J Soderquist Award honors the chosen alum with a $5000 prize that the recipient then awards to the

university program or area of their choosing ldquoThis is the type of program Charlie would have supportedrdquo Mike Child stated after receiving the award in May Mike and Reneacuteersquos dedication to philanthropic support has included an endowed scholarship fund to support students at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing an endowed research fund at the Center for Mind and Brain support for current research in the College of Engineeringrsquos Engineering Translation Technology Center and a $5 million commitment to establish the Child Family Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

The gift marks one of the latest accolades on We Are Aggie Pridersquos list of achievements Since its launch in February this philanthropy program has received numerous donations from students as well as alumni

With the purpose of the program to inspire undergraduates to give back it also emphasizes the need for students to take the continuously increasing cost of tuition and living expenses into their own hands When making a gift to the Students Helping Students Fund these contributions go directly back to students in need

Recently the philanthropic project was forwarded by

Chancellor Linda Katehi for the UC Office of the President Awards Program We Are Aggie Pride has received over 60 applications so far and has granted over $16500 in awards ldquoWe Are Aggie Pride is off to a great startrdquo says Zena Brown rsquo12 director of the program ldquoWe have come to realize that the need on our campus is much greater than we expected Donations right now are crucial so that we can keep helping studentsrdquo
