Nel 1919 Angelo Luigi Colombo dà il via alla propriaavventura di produttore di tubi d’acciaio: dopoappena sei mesi, dedicati al commercio di tubigenerici, il giovane imprenditore è in grado direalizzare i primi tubi di precisione, alcuni dei qualivengono immediatamente scelti per costruirel’ossatura delle biciclette di allora.Fin dall’inizio Angelo Luigi Colombo sceglie la stradadella diversificazione del prodotto: dai telai tubolariper idrovolanti e veicoli, alle racchette da sci, aimobili e alle biciclette, la creatività dell’impresaraggiunge tutte le nuove occasioni disperimentazione e applicazione del tubo.In quegli anni l’aeronautica è uno dei campi piùinteressanti per le ricerche sul materiale: nel ’27la A.L. Colombo entra a far parte della storiadell’aviazione, fornendo la struttura portante deivelivoli Caproni, condotti da Giuseppe De Pinedoe Italo Balbo, famosi protagonisti delle primetrasvolate atlantiche. Negli stessi anni la dittacontribuisce al successo della moto Guzzi sulle pistedel mondo e in contemporanea inizia la produzionedi tubi a spessore differenziato per telai di bicicletta.Tre anni più tardi, nel 1930, nasce il marchio‘Columbus’ con cui Angelo Luigi identifica inoltre laproduzione di mobili tubolari in acciaio cromato:i migliori architetti razionalisti di allora, Figini, Pollini,Terragni, Pagano, Bottoni, Pucci, Faccioli, disegnanoper la Columbus, dando origine a novità assolutenel settore del mobile. Dopo un primo periodosperimentale, in cui Columbus partecipa allaVI°Triennale di Milano e ottiene in esclusiva da EMBRUla produzione di mobili di Marcel Breuer, arriva ilsuccesso commerciale: uffici, scuole e altre comunitàrichiedono per il proprio arredo forniture Columbus.“La curiosità come anticamera della conoscenza” èil motto costante che caratterizza tutta l’attività: trail ’46 e il ’50 i tubi della A.L. In 1919, as Europe emerged from the ashes of theGreatWar, twenty-seven year old Angelo Luigi ‘A.L.’Colombo signed the lease on a small factory and sobegan the production of steel tubes.With demand forbicycles running high, their makers were amongst hisfirst customers – Edoardo Bianchi, Umberto Dei,Atala, Giovanni Maino.With his tubing well-provenin the bicycle industry, Angelo Luigi saw strengthin creativity and diversity and was soon supplyingmaterial for the tubular frames of seaplanes and roadvehicles, as well as for furniture and ski-poles.Italy was at the forefront of aviation in the 1920s, andColombo enjoyed a strong relationship with Caproni,manufacturing the tubing that formed the backboneof their famous aircraft. In 1927 Colombo became partof aviation history, with De Pinedo and Balbo’stransatlantic planes having airframes constructed fromColombo tubing – the same tubing that was, at that time,used to fabricated race-winningMotoGuzzi motorcyclechassis.To give increased strength and reducedweight,Colombo began experimenting with ‘butted’ tubes –those with wall thickness varying along the length.Three years later, in 1930, Angelo Luigi created thebrand name 'Columbus', which was initially onlyassociated with tubular chromed-steel furniture. Afteran initial trial period, in which Columbus exhibited attheVITriennale in Milan, Angelo Luigi obtainedexclusivity of supply to EMBRU for the production ofMarcel Breuer’s iconic furniture designs. Shortlyafterwards, Columbus furniture was in high demand –for offices, universities and schools as well as homes.The best rationalist architects of the time - Figini,Pollini,Terragni, Pagano, Pucci, Faccioli – crafteddesigns for Columbus, bringing innovation to thefurniture industry and further reinforcing the reputationof Columbus as leaders in modernist design.Later in the 1930s, the Columbus name, along with‘Aelle’ and ‘Tenax’ was first applied to special sets ofbicycle tubes – the Columbus tubes being drawn fromChrome Molybdenum steel and the fork blades beingelliptical, laying down standard characteristics thatremain commonplace to this day. Never satisfied,Colomboworked to themaxim“Curiosity is a prelude toknowledge” and continued to experiment in the fields ofmechanics and metallurgy. Colombo even designedand built their own butting machines to manufacture

the tubes with tapering wall thickness – reinforcingthe tubes at the joints where stresses are greatest.Colombo supplied tubes for racing car skeletons andColombo’s son, Gilberto, designed chassis for theimmortal Italian manufacturers Lancia, Maserati andFerrari. Fangio (‘El Maestro’), Ascari and ‘Gigi’Villoresiwere carried to victory on Colombo chassis. Some ofthe tube profiles created at this time were to find theirway onto bicycle frames in later years.‘Columbus’, a new company dedicated to thedevelopment and production of specialist tubes forbicycle frames, is formed in 1977. Antonio Colombo,youngest son of Angelo Luigi, leaves his position asPresident of AL Colombo to devote himself entirely tothe new-born Columbus.Extensive experience gained from cycle, aircraft andautomobile testingwas the driving force of the business:Columbus, reinforced by the fact that the Italian artisanswho use Columbus tubes are admired and known allover theworld, were determined to conquer internationalmarkets. Since that time continuous uninterruptedresearch, highlighting the parts of the frame subjectedto the highest stress, has helped to improve stiffnessand strength and increase resistance to deformationand breakage. Among the notable innovations are thetaper-gauge elliptical fork blades, the conical helix tubebutting, ‘Air’ – the first fully-aerodynamic tube set, and‘Max’ – offering the advantages of differing oversizetube profiles to bicycle designers and riders.Parallel to an increasingly diverse production line,manufacturing 900 different types of tubes all ofcontrolled origin and guaranteed quality, comes agrowing competitive sector. For record attempts onthe track, Columbus have developed super-light tubesets for the greatest champions: Coppi, Anquetil,Baldini, Rivière, Bracke, Ritter, Merckx, Moser, Oersted.The doctrine of intelligent experimentation andtechnological progress continues to be themain focus ofthe new Columbus SpA, independent fromAL Colombosince 1978. From research conducted in collaborationwith the most prestigious research institutions, andthrough sophisticated tests carried out on the road andin the laboratory, Columbus will continue to developnewmaterials and designs; new tube sets which arehighly valued by the top riders: from Gimondi toMerckx, Hinault to Argentin, Lemond and Roche.

MINIMAL FORKThe new monocoque fork of Columbus is called Minimal,with its essential and sober line, it has been developed fortraditional head sets, particularly for steel frames, as theiressential lines don’t complement oversize forks.The fork,made with overlapped layers of Carbon fibre used in theaeronautical industry, is available in the 1-1/8” version with rakeof 45 or 50mm; whilst the 1” version is available with 45 mmrake.The progressive curve of the fork blades dampnessvibrations and guarantees great handling stability also inextreme conditions.
