    corrisponde all'italiana Serie A.

2000. Dal 2002 al 2005, il campionato venne chiamatoHolland

Casino Eredivisie.

in trasferta. Come molte altre leghe dell'Europa continentale

Divisie viene automaticamente promosso in Eredivisie.

In entrambi

    Playoffs

    European competition

The KNVB introduced a playoff system in 2005-06 for the second to ninth placed clubs. The playoff system has

been criticized by clubs, players and fans as the number of matches will increase. The system also makes itpossible that the second-place team is forced the enter the UEFA Intertoto Cup while a lower placed team entersthe qualifying round of the Champions League (only if the cup winner is below 5th position). This happened in2005-06; AZ, 2nd in competition, had to play for the UEFA Cup, while Ajax, 4th in competition, went into theChampions League qualifying round, the same thing happened at the end of the 2007-08 season when Ajax, ranked 2nd in regular season, lost the playoff final match to FC Twente, meaning Twente went into theChampions League and Ajax the UEFA Cup.

For the 2008-09 season onwards, the playoff system is almost completely removed. Only the teams ending inthe fifth through eighth place (or possibly sixth through ninth, depending on the KNVB Cup finalists and their

respective position in the league) will play in play-offs for a ticket in the Europa League. [1]

    Relegation

The club at the bottom of the league (18th) is automatically relegated and switches places with the champion ofthe Eerste Divisie. The next-lowest two teams (16th and 17th) play in a promotion/relegation knock-out playoffknown as the Nacompetitie, in which they will face eight teams from the Eerste Divisie. Of those eight teams, six are periodical champions (bases on results held during the six periods in which the season is divided) and theother two are the highest ranking teams, that haven't held a periodical title yet. Teams finishing above 16thautomatically stay in the Eredivisie.

    Attendance

Since the beginning of the league, there are three clubs with an attendance much higher than the others: Ajax,PSV and Feyenoord. These clubs are followed by Heerenveen, FC Twente and FC Groningen, clubs that alsohave fairly large fanbases. The average league attendance was just over 7,000 in 1990, but the league has seen alarge rise in attendance with the building of many new stadiums and the expansion of several existing stadiumsnationwide. Current season average attendance is 19,745, with AFC Ajax having the largest (48,537) and FCVolendam having the smallest (5,294). Ajax' figures however differ from those provided by the AmsterdamArenA since the club counts all tickets sold instead of the number of people going through the turnstiles.
