MANIPOLAZIONE MANIPULATION
Manipulation 4
E perché prendere in considerazione soltanto i classici manipolatori rotativi o lineari, siano essi meccanici o elettronici, per fare questi movimenti?
Manipulation, why?
Why have we titled this catalogue “Manipulation”
instead of the more common “Manipulators”?
Because we have started from a more general
concept, i.e. moving an object from a place to
another one; here we are showing the various
means and products available at Autorotor to
actuate this action.
What is in fact manipulation, if not moving an
object from place to another one by means of a
series of movements of the same or different kind
(normally rotary and linear)?
And why should we take into consideration only
the “classic” rotary or linear manipulators, be they
mechanical or electronic, to make this action?
Why shouldn’t we examine a wide range of
products, which do not look like “normal”
manipulators, but which are more suitable for the
application, that they fulfil better, faster and more
economically.
This book shows the range of Autorotor products
for “manipulation”, as per the definition above.
Get in touch and let us know your needs; we’ll
find, together, the best solution.
Rotary manipulation.
We define a manipulation as “rotary manipulation”
when the action of moving a piece from one place
to another is actuated by a series of movements,
of which at least is rotary.
Several types of products can realise the rotary
manipulation:
- Manipulators BRMT2 and BRMT3
- Manipulators MAP series
- Manipulators BRM1
- Index tables with lift (mechanical or
pneumatic)
BRMT (BRMT2 and BRMT3) are mechanical units
which, by means of two barrel cams turn the
uniform rotating of the inlet shaft into an
intermittent angular and vertical stroke of the
output turret.
The angular stroke (i.e. the intermittent rotation
or oscillation of the arm) and the vertical stroke
(that is the lift and descend of said arm) follow
each other and are in phase with the application
cycle.
BRMTs angular stroke is normally 90° or 180°
(other angles can be realised on request), while
the vertical stroke ranges from 25 mm to 100
mm.
Speed can reach 120 cycles/min; as usual the less

30 Principali vantaggi - Movimento veloce e progressivo. - Regolarità ad alte frequenze. - Ripetibilità meccanica. - Possibilità di sincronizzazione meccanica
diretta al ciclo macchina. - Minima potenza installata. - Minima manutenzione, facile utilizzo.
Manipulators MAP (MAP 85, MAP 110 and MAP

turret through an output device cam flat, and its
lifting by a cam drum.
The manipulator MAP allows a different balance of
the phases of rotation is up, allowing to reach
very high working frequency (200 rpm) with 180 °
rotation of the arm without multiplication of the
rotation.
For BRM1 manipulators and indexing tables with
lift you can see at page 24 and 25.
Linear manipulation
We define a manipulation as “linear manipulation”
when the action of moving a piece from one place
to another is actuated by a series of movements,
all of them linear.
Several types of products can realise the linear
manipulation:
- Linear manipulator BRM2
- Linear manipulator UML300
- Electronic linear manipulator MLE
BRM2 manipulator is a mechanical unit transform,
by two double sides cams and transfer arms,
continuous rotation of inlet shaft into linear
displacement of horizontal and vertical stroke.
These are easily adjustable changing position of
rotating center on transmission arms.
Stroke X horizontal can be adjusted from 75-200
mm; stroke Y vertical can be adjusted from 30-75
mm.
The manipulator UML300 is a unit which converts
mechanical rotating uniform of inlet shaft into
rectilinear movement of the horizontal stroke and
vertical, through a trio of drum cams, whose
shape determines the type of cycle that is
executed. It is normally used as an accelerator of
pallets. It can carry heavy loads (until 70 kg).
The electronic linear manipulator MLE is described
in detail starting on page 30.
Main advantages - High speed continuous displacement
- Smooth running at high frequencies
- Mechanically repeatable
- Possible connect it directly to the running
cycle by mechanical transmission
- Low installed power
- Low maintenance, easy to use

MAP is a new type of manipulator.
It consists of a parallel axis intermittent drive
and a lubricated cam in a metal box placed
beneath it.
While the rotation is provided by the parallel
axis intermittent drive , the cam ensures, by
means of compound levers, the linear stroke.
MAP can operate up to 200 cycles/min and
doesn’t need any gear to rotate even by 180°.

The rotary table with lift, be it mechanical or
pneumatic, is not in itself a rotary manipulator, but
has the same combination of movements and fulfils
the same range of applications.
The rotary table with mechanical lift is a normal
rotary indexing table fixed to a plate; to the lower
side of said plate it is fixed a parellel axis,
intermittor/oscillator (AP or OP), to the output shaft
of which is keyed an eccentric. On the periphery of
the said eccentric runs one end of a shaft, the other
end of which may be fixed to a disc ( see picture
below) or move freely.
The disc (normally used when the weight to be
lifted is heavy), driven by the above mentioned
shaft, runs on four columns by means of bushes.
A chain ensures the phasing of the motion between
table and intermittor/oscillator; when the table
turns the AP/OP is in dwell, while when the table is
in dwell the AP/OP turns and with it the eccentric;
so the shaft and the disc move up and down.
When the phasing is got through a chain there is
only one motor; if the phasing is ensured by
electric/electronic systems, then two motors are
needed.
The AP/OP and eccentric can be replaced by a
pneumatic cylinder; in this case the phasing is
electric/electronic and two motors are needed.
We can so speak of rotary table with pneumatic lift.

Reduced production time very often results
from a cut in the time of moving pieces from
one place to another. Of paramount
importance has also become the flexibility of
the system, i.e. the possibility to turn out
pieces of relatively different kind.
The answer to these needs is the series of the
new electronic linear manipulators MLE,
fast, programmable, reliable.
These units are ready to set up, both from the
mechanical and the electronic standpoint, and
easy to use.

motors where rotor and stator are not “rolled
up” (picture n°1), but “unrolled” (picture n°2),
and generate a linear force instead of a
torque.
Contrary to the mechanical manipulators,
motion is not transmitted by cams or
mechanical gears, but by induced
electromagnetic forces; thus also the
mechanical wear is close to nil.
MLE series is powered by LSM (Linear
Synchronous Motor), today’s ultimate for
automatic machines. Control and feeding
systems are very simple and, just like the
ones for the rotary brushless motor,
considered an industrial standard.
On the top of it, the standard of thrust and
stroke and the accuracy of these motors
answer the specific needs of the automatic
machines very well.
The position control is ensured by very
sophisticated systems, the best ones when
repeatability and positioning are at a
stake.
To be underlined also the easy communication
of MLE series with the outside. Its control
system is open to all existing available field
bus, including the most modern
communication protocols based on Ethernet,
commonly used in local networks.

How fast can a linear manipulator make a complete ABA cycle? It depends on the load it has to carry. The table below (number of cycles carried load), self explanatory, has been calculated assuming a horizontal stroke of 110 mm and a vertical stroke of 50 mm. Negligible shake effect is ensured all through the cycle.
Of course you can plan higher speed on the strokes without load and/or anticipate the start of the axes. Then the total cycle time will be shorter.
