Why do some say that women involved in wine are just ladies from
good families... Go and say that to women like Marilena Barbera
who, on her company's 15 hectares in Ben cello, on the sand af the
Belice river, invented a rosa called La Bambina, which was unimagi-
nable in Sicily. Go and say that to women like Arianna Occhipin ti

value of women in Sicilian wine companies, says - we were the real

revolutionised alone, with ( resources and the intuition tl Friuli
white grapes could grown on Mount Ence.
Is this why women are needed in wine companies in Sicily? To
negotiate with clients? There are women of wine, or bet- ter,
ladies of wine, that are ca- pable of being traders, that know how
to make a deal, negotiate, win over clients. That's what I've been
doing for almost 15 years. And there are women, on the other hand,
who are in the com- pany, the countryside, the winery, who not only
know the secrets of wine making, perhaps because they studied at
the school of wine greats, but they have that touch of creativity
and imagina- tion, that artistic touch, that is able to transform a
Grillo into a unbelievable white or a Cerasuo- to into an
unforgettable red.
So you stopped sending bi wine to Verona and start with Muller
Thurgau. Truthfully, at the time, we h thought about creating a li
called "Mezzogiorno" with t Pasqua group. The success our Muller
Thurgau at Vinitaly 1999 changed the landscaf Indeed, a Muller
Thurgau, ma and bottled in Fulgatore, h never been done
before.
Put like that, it's an exaggeration Not entirely. I'll tell you my
story, the story of a woman, daughter of a doctor from Agrigento,
who was very good at school. I got top grades in Italian, like my
classmate Angelina Alfano. Yes that one, the Minister of the In-
terior. I graduated in law, plan ned a judicial career, then met my
husband, Mimmo Fazio, of the Fazios that have been ma king wine for
5 generations. Ifell in love with wine and everything about it,
wine makers, produ- cers, agriculturalcouncillors...
But they are not part of the Donne del Vino Association.. . What

January, together with her brother Anto- nio, has a surprise up her
sleeve. "Do you know what I do when I present a wine, at the end of
the tasting, while the men talk business? I take my cello or
clarinet and I start to play". Because wine, in Sicily, is not only
ff mmfna, it is musical. It is also aristocratic, as demonstrated
by Francesca (Chicca) Planeta. "Leave the no- bility and blue
bloods be" she gracefully replies from her Milan home. "My name
helped only to put an effective communi- cation strategy in place
when I joined the company, in 1995 because it's short, sug-
gestive, memorable. I would have liked to have put the family crest
on the label, with the stars, planets, a lion. Barons of Santa
Cecilia, by innovating tradition, allowed the family to pass the
title to women too, a sign that the Planeta women have always
mattered. Yet I preferred to concentrate on the name, the brand,
strengthened by my experience as brand manager at Nestle and it
worked" History confirms it. 20 years ago there were only vineyards
in Sambuca. Today 6 companies carry the Planets brand, 2.3 million
bottles are made with 14 million euro in turnover and 18% EBITDA,
one of the most important factors and a sign of excellent
profitability considered the indu stry average, which is rather
low. It is to Chicca's merit that she has built a very faithful
sales network throughout the ye- ars, working along side her
cousins Ales- sio and Santi, perhaps the best and most equipped
Sicilian wine makers. They inhe- rited their wine talent from their
uncle Die- go, the owner of the Settesoli cooperative in Mena, the
biggest in Europe. Chicca, on the other hand, has travelled allover
Euro pe and has globetrotting in her DNA thanks to her English
mother and is curious and

women, as we all know, are stubborn. And Annamaria and Clara, lucky
heirs of an unrivalled wine heritage, will get there in the end.
Gaetana Jacono, owner of the Valle dell'A- cate wine company, has
also inherited around 100 hectares of vineyards from her father, a
land owner, spread between Vittoria and Ragusa. Just that before
she arrived(she studied in Milan, dreaming of becoming an actress,
and where she married), the Valle dell'A- cute scraped by with

she says, calmly, that "to be involved in agriculture, today, is a
revolutionary choice" and that 'true power will always lie with
those that produce food" and that wine is not a drink, but food".

Marilena it's not important to talk about the Sicilian market that

sensibility and is not very receptive. Because in the Sicily of
wine that wins over the world", she explains," Sicilians know next

would know how to apprecia te". She concludes with: "Sicilians have
