President’s Message Colombo Club Auxiliary
President’s MessageThe Auxiliary was on vacation for the month of July. I
hope everyone had a safe 4th of July. It is always fun to
celebrate Independence Day. Many Italian Americans,
coming from Italy hoped to achieve the dream of
becoming an American citizen. This was my father’s
dream. Even though he became a citizen, we were still
raised with our Italian heritage.
Our Bingo event on August 25 is shaping up to be a
fun- filled afternoon with great snacks and a delicious dessert – plus the fun of playing Bingo and winning
cash prizes! Tickets are $15 per person, this includes a Bingo card. Extra Bingo cards are available for $5 each. This event starts at 3 pm in the Isabella Room.
Call Yvonne to make reservations (510) 531-2429. See
the enclosed flyer for more information.
The Italian-American clubs’ annual Family Picnic is
Saturday, August 31, at the Martinez Marina. Don’t miss this fun-filled family event. For more information see the flyer in this issue or call Tony Tedeschi at (510) 653-9020 ext. 306.
Looking ahead, the Auxiliary is planning its annual Back to School dinner for September 19. This event is chaired by Jean Inferrera. More information to follow.
Our next general meeting is scheduled for August 21 at 7 pm in the Isabella Room. Member Mindee Lilley will
speak to us about diabetes. This is one of the charities we support. Join us for our meeting and learn more
about diabetes.
Looking forward to seeing you. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
Blessings, Ciao,
Yvonne Guidi-Evans, Auxiliary President
Ciao, Ciao,
Ninety nine years, what an amazing accomplishment. We are one year away from our 100 year anniversary. Think about that for a moment, 100 years. Not very many people can say that they are part of such an historic time. It is easy to imagine back in time when Maggiorino Lovisone, the club’s first president, let some of his friends hang out at his house after work (not knowing that history was being made). That same respect for our members and family continues to this day. We welcome everyone to the Club and continue to share the love and companionship of our charter members. Diamo il benvenuto a tutti al club e continuiamo a condividere l’amore e la agnia dei nostri soci fondatori.
The gift of being able to MC a birthday dinner gives to you the entire experience right in front of you. One must absorb the moment of 450 guests talking and eating and having a great time together. This is exactly what our charter members wanted and we continue to deliver their dream. Questo è esattamente ciò che i nostri soci fondatori desideravano e abbiamo realizzato il loro sogno.
I hope you were able to make this year’s past president’s dinner. To say it was special is too soft. We honored the past presidents for their work and continuing the dream of the past and helping to create new dreams for the future. I past presidenti hanno continuato il sogno del passato e aiutano a creare nuovi sogni per il futuro. I personally would like to extend my gratitude for the hard work of our past presidents.
Now we look forward to enjoying a full month of Father Daughter Birthday Dinners. Make sure you bring your daughter and enjoy a great evening together. Actions create moments. Make the action with your daughter and create the moment. Le azioni creano momenti, rendono l’azione con tua figlia e creano il momento.
The assembly meeting on August 20 is a very important meeting. Along with inducting new members, we will be talking about new and exciting things to come this year. The always favorite salsiccia con peppers will be on the menu for the night.
Make sure you reach out to Tony Tedeschi and Billy Castell who always work with the A’s for tickets for Italian Heritage night at the Oakland A’s game on August 3rd. Thank you Tony and Billy for chairing one of the great events of the year.
Bocce has become a staple event for the Club. The next tournament is on August 25. Thanks to John and Dave Nardi, bocce is one of the highlight events for the Club followed up by the Italian picnic on August 31.
To everyone that participates operating and working on committees, be it social or daily operations, Thank you for all you do.
Thank You!! Grazie, Grazie

News & NotesThe Family Pizza Night in June
was a Fun-tastic Event! In addition to wine tasting upstairs (thank you to member Mark Rezente of Grocery Outlet for supplying it!) and root beer floats for dessert downstairs, Club member and world-famous pizza tosser, TONY GEMIGNANI, gave
his pizza tossing demonstration in the upstairs ballroom to
a sell-out crowd of Club and Auxiliary members and their
families. Downstairs, delicious pizza was served during
dinner, gifted to the event by Tony and his food suppliers.
The Colombo Club and Colombo Club Women’s Auxiliary
extend their appreciation to Tony and his food suppliers for
their generosity in providing the ingredients for the pizzas
served during dinner.

Our Cultural Heritageby Rich Puppione, Colombo Club Co HistorianAugust Dates in Colombo Club HistoryEach month leading up to the Club’s 100 year anniversary, I will be reporting on the events leading up to this gala celebration and highlighting some of our rich history.
• In October we will start selling the 100 Year Colombo Club apparel at all events.
• Starting in January 2020, we will be selling a variety of very unique and limited 100 year memorabilia each month.
• Since we have 1000 members in the Club and there is only room for 530 attendees in our dining room, we will be having several anniversary dinners during the month of August 2020. For the Anniversary dinner of August 22, 2020 we will be limiting prepaid reservations to a member and one guest. This Gala Celebration dinner will be $50 each. Reservations for this dinner will go on sale February 1, 2020. There will be no comps for this dinner.
• Reservations for the other two anniversary dinners will go on sale in May 1, 2020.• We would like to display your family photos of Colombo Club events, marriages, birthdays, anniversaries, retirements, etc. If you have any historical family photos from events at the Club and would like us to display them in the Isabella room during the
month of August 2020, please send a copy of those photos by mail or email them to [email protected].
• There will be an art, poster, essay and poetry contest for elementary, middle and high school students about their Italian heritage or connection with the Colombo Club.
August Events in Colombo Club History
Colombo Club was founded on August 22, 1920 by 22 Piemontese Italian pioneers. They would gather at the Lovisone residence, the first location of the Colombo Club for about two years.
August 1922, The First Regular Board Meeting – President Delfino Damonte officiated 29 of the 36 members that belonged to the club are present. After a few chats, delighting themselves as intimate colleagues, they confirmed their will to promote the wellness of the club. $192.70 out of the Club’s account went to the State of California. There was a debit of $3900 spent for the erection of the new building of the Club. At that point the members joined in happy and joyful alcoholic beverages, offered by the President Delfino Damonte in collaboration with the treasurer G. Ollino. “With the bond of New Colombo Club Incorporated, we declare closed the first regular session.”
In August 1936, a resolution was passed to plaster the walls of the club and construct a new bar, lengthen the room towards the rear of the club, add a flue in the kitchen and add another bathroom. Members were asked to contribute up to $100 each and would be reimbursed at a rate of 4% annually for the Club renovations.
In August 1980, the Board passed that the club would hold a father daughter night during the birthday dinners in August. A member stated, “I am glad that my idea of a father daughter night has already been approved. With all the mischief that is going on with the younger generation, we cannot do too much to eliminate some of the grief and misery that we read about.”On August 8, 2009, John and Dave Nardi organized the First Annual Colombo Boccé Day in Martinez with nearly 80 players.
On August 21, 2012, Past President, John Penna, made a motion to create a “Military Service Wall of Honor” which would honor members who served in the military. Rich Puppione assembled and maintains this display in the Ed Basso/ Isabella Room.
