Medico di formazione con specializzazione in Immunologia, il Dr. De Berardinis ha dedicato la sua carriera scientifica allo studio dei meccanismi molecolari e cellulari che regolano il funzionamento del sistema immunitario. Nel corso della carriera si è inoltre delineata, e sempre più rafforzata, la finalità di tradurre i risultati della ricerca in reagenti di possibile utilizzo nel campo immunoterapeutico e nella formulazione di nuovi vaccini. Negli anni più recenti, questa tendenza ha portato a incrementare la produzione scientifica focalizzandola su aspetti di valore traslazionale e ha portato alla produzione di quattro brevetti di interesse immunologico. Di particolare rilevanza è il brevetto “T cell receptors” riguardante una tecnologia per lo sviluppo di reagenti utilizzabili per la immunoterapia dei tumori, un settore industriale di frontiera che ha visto rapidi e cospicui avanzamenti negli anni più recenti. Su iniziativa del Dr. De Berardinis, il brevetto è stato acquistato, nonostante il carattere ancora iniziale di sviluppo della tecnologia a fini commerciali, da investitori privati interessati al suo possibile sfruttamento e ciò ha determinato un immediato introito per il CNR e ha aperto ampie prospettive di collaborazione pubblico-privato per lo sviluppo della tecnologia. Il Dr. De Berardinis ha altresì ottenuto, nel corso della sua carriera, numerosi finanziamenti per la sua ricerca che gli hanno anche permesso di contribuire in maniera significativa all'economia dell’istituto CNR di appartenenza, nonchè di attivare numerose posizioni a tempo determinato per giovani ricercatori e gli sono valsi nel 2005 un riconoscimento da parte
del Presidente del CNR. Ha inoltre svolto attività didattica e formativa per le giovani generazioni di ricercatori. In particolare, negli anni 2013-2015 è stato docente nel dottorato di Immunologia della Universidade Federal do Rio De Janeiro (Brasile) e dal 2011 è membro del collegio dei docenti nel dottorato di “Biotecnologie Molecolari e Cellulari” della Seconda Università di Napoli (SUN). Il Dr. De Berardinis è autore di 59 pubblicazioni su riviste internazionali e ha un impact factor attivo (primo/ultimo e corresponding author) di 215,77 (fonte Isi Wos). Il Dr. De Berardinis ha fatto parte del consiglio direttivo della società italiana di Immunologia (SIICA) ed è associate editor di due riviste internazionali ISI (SJR quartile Q1 e Q2). L’attività di ricerca del Dr. De Berardinis è stata altresì riconosciuta dagli inviti a presentare le sue ricerche innovative in prestigiose istituzioni internazionali.
