Skylines, old and newEvery Italian city has one architectural treasure of irresistible charm: its roofs. As mainfeatures of a heterogeneous and evocative spectacle, these represent an essential partof the scenery with the organic and extremely varied appearance of their pitches, as wellas the variety of characteristic colours of the terracotta roof coverings, vibrating withlights and shadows. In both large monuments and residential dwellings alike, the roofwith its sloping surfaces and proportions, has always been a strongly charismatic con-structive component. Its unmistakable profile does in fact trace the extreme limit be-tween the land and the sky.

struttura portante discontinua o conti-nua.
(Fig. 4).
Realizzazione dello Strato diCoperturaTegole Portoghesi e Olandesi.
Timber Batten LayoutsTimber battens, which are usually in firwood and with a section of 4x4 cm (Fig.1), should be laid parallel to the eavescourse (Fig. 2). They should be 3-4 metresin length and must be laid at a distance tosuit the tile gauge. Adjacent battensshould be separated by a gap of approxi-mately 3-4 cm in order to allow air to cir-culate. Battens must be nailed into placemanually where the type of structureallows this or riveted into place if the roofboarding has an underlying T-beam brid-ge in concrete or lastly, using two mortarblocks when the underlying roof boardinghas been built using prefabricated beamsand large hollow tiles or any other mate-rial that cannot be nailed. We would liketo stress that the gauge between the firstand second batten rows (starting fromthe eaves) is different to the distance bet-ween the successive battens due to thesimple fact that the tiles must projectslightly over the eaves (Fig. 3), and that inorder to maintain the same pitch as therest of the roof covering, the first row ofbatten strips must be 2 cm higher thanthe others. (Fig. 4).
Making and Installing CompositionMortar FilletsFillets must be cast in composition mortar(150 kg cement, 175 - 225 kg hydrauliclime for every cubic metre of dry sand). They must be approximately 10 cm inwidth and 2 - 3 cm thick (Fig. 5 - Fig. 6).These fillets must be spaced with a gap ofapproximately 5 cm every 2 linear metresin order to facilitate the run-off of any infil-trated water and to guarantee the propermicroventilation under the tiles. Beforelaying the tiles, it is necessary to wait untilthe fillets are perfectly dry in order to pre-vent slippage. As far as the layoutis concerned, the indica-tions given for timberbattens shouldbe followed.
Tegole romane.(Embrice + Coppo).
The roof tiles must be laid in such a way asto allow the proper under-tile ventilation. This means leaving enough room to allowthe formation of upward currents of airwhich, starting from the eaves, will rise upto pass through the relevant, speciallycreated spaces and through the joints ofthe tiles (created by the shapes of the tilesthemselves) until it reaches the ridge. Wetherefore strongly advise that the tiles areraised a few centimetres above the surfa-ce of the underlying support structure bycreating a framework (using battens intimber or other material) upon which thetiles can then be laid. This operation ser-ves for the following:1 It allows any damp and condensation
formed on the tile underside to evapo-rate, as well as the evaporation anddrying of any micro-transpiration thatis caused by the porous nature of thetiles themselves.
2 It also helps to maintain the tile surfacetemperature at the same level on bothsides (top and underside) during thewinter and above all, during frost andthaw cycles.
In practice the above-mentioned precau-tions will mean better thermal and hygro-metric stability of the roof void and increa-sed durability of the roof covering itself.
Types of SupportPica recommends laying its roof tiles onone of the following two types of support:• Timber strips fixed to a continuous or
discontinuous supporting structure. • Continuous composition mortar fillets.

Roof Covering InstallationPortuguese Inter-locking Roof Tilesand PantilesPortuguese Interlocking Roof Tiles andPantiles are laid in the same manner.Firstly a row of tiles should be laid alongthe eaves course, followed by vertical tilecourses in line with the direction of theroof pitch. The tiles should be alignedusing a rule at least every 3-4 rows.
Plain Roof TilesThese are laid in successive horizontalrows that are parallel to the eaves course. It is possible to stagger the joints of thetiles in order to increase the run-off of rain-water on roofs with large surfaces.
Roman Roof Tiles(Flat Tile + Concave Tile). For this type ofcovering, which is known as “Romanstyle”, the tiles are installed by laying aninitial layer of tiles (flat) starting from theeaves course and proceeding towards theridge. These tiles should overlap to formwell-aligned, vertical courses. The conca-ve tiles are then placed onto this layer, with the concave side facing downwardsand in such a way as to cover the jointsbetween the flat tiles. The correct way to“pair” these tiles is to stagger the headlapof the concave tiles by approximately 7 cmbelow that of the flat tiles (the top part ofthe concave tile must be placed up againstthe thickness of the flat tiles on the rowabove it).

The lengthways battens must be fixedto the supporting structure below usingsufficiently long lath nails when the underl-ying structure is in timber or other types ofeasily nailed material, that is to say, fixed tothe underlying structure by means of rive-ting when the structure is in concrete orfixed into place with at least two mortarblocks when the underlying structure is inlarge hollow tiles or other material that can-not be nailed. Horizontal battens maysimply be nailed into place each time thatthey cross over a vertical batten.

Therefore, the overlapping ofconcave tiles, as shown in the table on theprevious page, is recommended accordingto the location of the building (it is wellknown that other types of roof tile are laidusing fixed joints) in order to ensure thatthe roof is perfectly meteoric water proof.
