LHCb report presentato all’LHCC Computing Manpower Review 3/9/2003

M1 peculiaritiesIn order to reduce material in front of SPD/ECAL, M1 layout is slightly different from M2-M5:
• MWPCs only have 2 wire gaps instead of 4• the structural panels are made from Nomex honeycomb instead of
polyurethane foam
• this reduces the average thickness of station from 33% to 15% X0• redundancy is still ensured by having the two gaps read out independently
The choice of the technology for the inner regions (R1,R2) of M1 will be madeafter an aging test to be performed in June.

Uniformity test• Cosmic uniformity test is based on the count rate measurements from wire strips or cathode pads. These rates are consisted from noise and cosmic particle signals. The comparison of the counts when the cosmic particles are dominating will characterize the chamber uniformity.
• Count rate dependencies on voltage will give not only the chamber uniformity but estimation the plateau limit (PNPI production center).
• Special test station is now being developed in CBPF (Brazil) for the CERN.
