Following a long period of re-cession, the construction market finally appears to be on the road to recovery. The data from the 79th Euro-construct Conference held in Warsaw on 12 June 2015 painted a picture of a Euro-pean continent emerging from the tunnel of the crisis. Although the forecast growth percentages are still small, the three year period 2015-2017 is expected to be decisive - albeit with signifi-cant variations between dif-ferent countries and in gen-eral with more promising prospects in Central and Eastern Europe. Moreover, the forecasts for construction reflect those for the economy as a whole. The long period of recession in Europe appears to have fi-nally come to an end in 2014, with GDP expected to grow throughout the region both in 2015 and, even more strongly, in the two-year peri-od 2016-2017. Factors contributing to the recovery include low oil pric-es, continued low interest rates and the weakness of the euro.According to the latest Euro-construct forecasts, the con-struction industry’s total turn-over will amount to 1,366 billion euros in 2015 (+1.9%). The growth rate will then sta-bilise at 2.5% over the follow-ing two years to reach 1,436 billion euros in 2017. The European economy will be driven by new invest-ments and the construction
growth rate will exceed that of GDP in 2015-2017. The out-look is therefore positive, al-though the prospects still re-main well below pre-crisis levels.
The good news for Italy is that against this backdrop of Eu-rope-wide recovery, the country’s construction indus-try is also at last showing signs of life. This is confirmed by the Cresme survey presented by Lorenzo Bellicini at the ANDIL general meeting. To sum up the situation, Italy has a difficult time ahead, but on the whole the situa-tion is better than at any time during the last 6-7 years. 2014 brought to an end the sixth and longest construc-tion cycle since the end of the Second World War, which lasted twenty years. According to Cresme, 2015 will be a watershed year marking the start of the sev-enth cycle, with small growth in investments (+0.3%), fol-lowed by a stronger +2.5% in 2016 and then +3% in 2017.Importantly, the recovery will continue to be driven by the renovation segment, which currently accounts for almost 70% of the value of the Italian building industry. One of the main drivers will be the capacity to offer high-er quality, sustainability, man-agement and process inno-vation – in other words a set of characteristics capable of profoundly transforming the approach to construction.
