Isometric Stretch of the TMJ – Opening
! Open your mouth as wide as you can.
! Attempt to close your mouth while you gently
resist this movement with your fingers using equal
counterforce on your chin.
! There should be no jaw movement.
! Maintain the contraction for 3-5 seconds, and then
relax your jaw.
! While still relaxed, open your jaw a little further
with the fingers on your chin.
Repeat _____ times. Do _____ sets daily.
Isometric Stretch of the TMJ – Lateral Movement
! Open your mouth slightly and move your jaw to the left as far as you can
comfortably.
! Place the fingers of your right hand on your right
lower jaw.
! Resist jaw movement to the right with your fingers
using equal counterforce.
! There should be no jaw movement..
! Maintain the contraction for 3-5 seconds, then relax
your jaw.
! While still relaxed, slowly push your jaw a little
further towards the left with your right hand.
! Repeat this entire exercise on the opposite side.
