Only the name remains in memory of a battle that saw the death of 7,000 Sardinians: S’Occidroxiu, the Slaughter. It is 30 June 1409. The end of an epoch, the Judicial era. The dream of a united and free Sardinia, long cultivated by the Kingdom of Arborea and strenuously defended by the Judge Eleonora d’Arborea, dies along with her. A long-forgotten event, like many that dot the history of Sardinia; but today, in a rediscovery of its identity, this important historical fact, of European importance, comes back to life in a biennial event whose first edition was held in 1997. As if in a time machine, events, historical figures, slices of social, political and economic life in the past are brought to life before our eyes. The event, which is organized and coordinated by the Pro Loco (volunteer tourism association) of Sanluri, is now on its eighth edition, has become a must-see of great importance because of the participation of numerous groups and associations of historical re-enactment from various parts of the island. The history of Sardinia spans millenia. Its artefacts and places tell of long-ago epochs in which which capable warriors faced off with rich civilizations from beyond the sea, but also of long periods of conquest and domination by sea-faring populations. A nuraghe at the edge of a high plane, a piece of Roman road along the inland mountains, a castle on an impenetrable peak or a church nestled in a solitary landscape…These are the backdrops and spaces that have seen the movements of historical figures and events that are relived, as if magically, in the same exact spots centuries later. In Sardinia, the most widespread re-enactments are the Medieval one thanks to the perfect settings of its monuments, but there are also troupes that tell stories, events, situations from the Nuragic and Roman world, all carefully and precisely documented historically through reference to researchers and scholars. An interesting slice of military and social life is re-enacted every year by Ad Signa Milites during the month Historical re-enactments. A magical journey through the past Muy caro y muy amado sobrino: por tal que somos ciertos qu’ende hauredes plazer, certificamos vos que hoy, dada de la present, havemos recebido una letra del rey de Sicilia, nuestro muy caro primogénito, significàndonos la execuciòn e exterminio feytos por ell, obrant l’ayuda de nuestro senor Dios… cuentra vescomte de Narbona e otros sequaces suyos e toda la naciòn sardesca traydora e rebelle a nos e al dito rey…” (“Dearest Nephew, Certain as we are that it will give you pleasure, we herein attest that, on this day, we have received a letter from the King of Sicily, our beloved first-born, in which it is communicated his charge of execution and extermination, with the help of Our Lord…of the Viscount of Narbona, other of his followers and of the entire Sardinian nation, traitors and rebels against our King…”) This is how the King of Aragona expressed himself in a letter sent to the infant Ferdinando di Pastiglia, in a copy to the royal courts and the principalities of Europe, to communicate the execution and extermination to be carried out by his son Martino the Younger, King of Sicily and sole heir to the Crown of Argon, against the Viscount Gugliemo III of Barbona, called on in 1408 to take over the reins of the Kingdom of Arborea, which had remained without heirs after the death of Eleonora d’Arborea (1404) and of her son Mariano V in 1407. It is a torrid summer morning. The low heights of Sanluri, a fortified burg on the border between the Judgeship of Arborea and Cagliari, burnt by the sun, smelling of hay and waiting. Suddenly, the imposing Franco-Sardinia army, with the strength of 20,000 men – foot soldiers and cavalry – guided by Viscount Gugliemo III of Barbona, appear on a hill behind Sanluri. The answer is not long in coming. From the enemy encampment, Martin the Younger appears at the head of his army in full war gear. One moment and destiny is set: quickly they take position on a knoll, with the sun to their backs. He orders the flag-bearer to start the battle and he moves toward the crest of the hill Bruncu de sa battalla (Battle Hill), where the Viscount’s army is arrayed, coming toward him. The Sardinian army, blinded by the light of the sun and poorly led, divided into two by a thrust of the enemy cavalry is encircled and broken off into two trunks. One flees the command of the Viscount toward the Monreale Castle to find shelter, whereas the other is massacred; a few foot al confine tra il Giudicato di Arborea e quello di Cagliari, arsi dal sole, profumano di fieno e di attesa. Improvviso, l’imponente esercito franco-sardo, forte di circa 20.000 uomini tra fanti e cavalieri, guidato dal visconte Guglielmo di Narbona, appare su una collina dietro Sanluri. La risposta non si fa attendere. Dall’accampamento nemico, Martino il Giovane compare alla testa del suo esercito in pieno assetto di guerra. Un attimo e le sorti sono segnate: velocemente si posiziona attorno a un poggio, col sole alle spalle. Ordina al suo portabandiera di dare inizio alla battaglia e si sposta verso la cresta collinare Bruncu de sa battalla (il colle della battaglia), dov’è schierato l’esercito del visconte che gli va incontro. monumentali che fungono da perfette cornici, ma vi sonoanche gruppi che raccontano episodi, avvenimenti,situazioni del mondo nuragico e romano, ricavati daun’attenta e precisa documentazione storiografica che siavvale dell’apporto di ricercatori e studiosi. Interessantespaccato di vita militare e sociale, Ad Signa Milites si svolgeogni anno nel mese di maggio in località La Crucca, traSassari e Porto Torres, ripropone principalmente un castraromano (accampamento romano), con un forte interamentecostruito in legno, baracche per i soldati, recinti per glianimali e, in posizione opposta, un possibile villaggio dipopolazioni indigene.

Solo un nome rimane aricordo di una battaglia che vide la morte di circa 7.000Sardi: S’Occidroxiu, Il Macello. È il 30 giugno 1409. È la finedi un’epoca, quella giudicale, e il sogno di una Sardegnaunita e libera, lungamente coltivato dal Regno di Arborea estrenuamente difeso dalla giudicessa Eleonora d’Arborea,muore con essa. Un avvenimento a lungo dimenticato, cometanti di cui è disseminata la storia della Sardegna; ma oggi,in una riscoperta della propria identità, questo importantefatto storico, di portata europea, rivive in unamanifestazione biennale, la cui prima edizione risale al 1997.Come in una macchina del tempo, fatti, personaggi,spaccati di vita sociale, politica ed economica del temporivivono davanti ai nostri occhi. L’evento, organizzato ecoordinato dalla Pro Loco di Sanluri, giunto ormai alla suaottava edizione, è divenuto un appuntamento di notevolerilievo anche perché vede la partecipazione dei numerosigruppi e associazioni di rievocazioni storiche provenienti dadiversi centri dell’isola. La Sardegna ha un respiro millenario,che riporta con i suoi segni e i suoi luoghi a epocheantichissime dove abili guerrieri sfidavano le ricche civiltà aldi là del mare, ma anche a lunghi periodi di conquiste edominazioni di popolazioni provenienti dal mare. Un nuraghe sul bordo di un altopiano, un tratto di stradaromana tra le montagne dell'interno, un castello su un piccoimpervio o una chiesa incastonata in un paesaggio solitario...Sono questi gli scenari e gli spazi che hanno visto muoversipersonaggi ed eventi che rivivono, quasi per incanto, neglistessi luoghi, a distanza di secoli. In Sardegna, i più diffusisono quelli medievali grazie alla presenza di scenari
of May in La Crucca, between Sassari and Porto Torres; it mainlyre-enacts a Roman castra (Roman encampment), with a fortmade entirely out of wood, bivouacs for the soldiers, fences foranimals and, on the opposite position, a village of indigenouspopulation. This resource of historical memory is enriched everyyear with the support of Roman re-enactment groups: Cohors IISardorum, Legion IV Flavia di Sanluri and Legion III Augusta diSassari; of the historical group of non-Romanized Sardiniansstands out the Sassari cultural group Sardinia Balare.Duels between Sardinian Pelliti and Romans, demonstrations ofRoman battle techniques and assault, scenes of life of thelegionnaires and their families are the most salient events.Among the groups participating, we highlight the group CohorsII Sardorum (Ist-IInd Century A.D.) or the “second court ofSardinians,” created by the association Memoriae Milites inCagliari, with the intent of reproducing the clothing, life andculture of the auxiliary military unit made up of Sardiniansregularly enlisted in the Roman Imperial army. An association ofwide interests, Memoriae Milites, founded in 2005, is also activein the study of Medieval and Arborense culture and in the re-
enactment of the Medieval fencing, of which it does factualdemonstrations nationally.The vicissitudes of the Judgeship of Torres are the scenery forhistorical research and re-enactment by the Association of theJudgeship of Torres, one of the four sovereign states into whichMedieval Sardinia (800/900 – 1200/1400 A.D.) was divided.Established for the purpose of advancing Medieval studies inSardinia and of the Judgeship in particular, the Associationdepicts important events from the life of the Judgeship, trainingitself in the uses and customs of the epoch. From 2006, year ofits establishment, it has organized various events, such as the onein 2008, “Comita’s Dream” (see article on the Basilica of SanGavino), and in 2009 “Mercantes ad Turrem,” the first Medievalfair with enactments of daily life.Yet again in Sassari, the Middle Ages is fully relived with theexhibit “Arts and Spells,” which is held between the end ofSeptember and October in the enchanting historical burg ofCastelsardo, promoted by the City Administration and the localPro Loco. A rich program that enlivens spectators by projectingthem into the thick of the Middle Ages.

Il parco di memoria storica si arricchisce ogni annodell’apporto di gruppi di rievocazione romana: la CohorsII Sardorum, la Legio IV Flavia di Sanluri e la Legio IIIAugusta di Sassari; del gruppo storico dei Sardi nonromanizzati, è da sottolineare il circolo culturale di SassariSardinia Balare. Duelli tra Sardi Pelliti e Romani, dimostrazioni di tecnicheromane di combattimento e di assalto, scene di vita deilegionari e delle loro famiglie costituiscono gli eventi piùsalienti. Tra i gruppi partecipanti, è da sottolineare ilCohors II Sardorum (I-II secolo d.C.) o “seconda coortedei Sardi”, creato dall’Associazione Memoriae Milites diCagliari con l’intento di riprodurre il vestiario, la vita e lacultura di un’unità militare di reparti ausiliari costituiti daSardi regolarmente schierati all’interno dell’esercitoimperiale romano. Associazione di ampio respiro,Memoriae Milites, sorta nel 2005, è inoltre attiva nellostudio della cultura medievale e arborense e nellariproposizione della scherma medievale, di cui dà fattivadimostrazione anche in ambito nazionale. Le vicende del Giudicato di Torres sono lo scenario diricerca e rievocazione storica dell’Associazione Giudicatodi Torres, uno dei quattro stati sovrani in cui era divisa laSardegna nel periodo medievale (800/900 – 1200/1400d.C.). Nata con lo scopo di portare avanti gli studi sulMedioevo in Sardegna e sul Giudicato di Torres inparticolare, l’Associazione rappresenta momentiimportanti della vita del Giudicato, addentrandosi negliusi e costumi dell’epoca. Dal 2006, anno della suacostituzione, ha organizzato diversi eventi tra cui, nel2008, la rappresentazione di «Il Sogno di Comita» (vediarticolo sulla Basilica di San Gavino) e, nel 2009,«Mercantes ad Turrem», la prima fiera medievale conriproposizioni di momenti di vita quotidiana. Sempre nel territorio di Sassari, il Medioevo rivive appieno
con la manifestazione «Arti e Incanti», che si svolge trafine settembre e ottobre nell’incantevole borgo storico diCastelsardo, promossa dall’Amministrazione comunale edalla locale Pro Loco. Un ricco programma che per tregiorni allieta i presenti proiettati in pieno Medioevo.Un Medioevo che si racconta in tutta la sua magnificenzanel «Ritorno degli Arborea», riproposizione storica dellacerimonia d’investitura di Eleonora d’Arborea (1340-1404) a giudicessa del Regno omonimo. La rievocazione,rientrante nelle festività del Settembre Oristanese, sisvolge ogni anno nel Palazzo Comunale. La principessa efutura regnante, dopo essere stata vestita dei suoipreziosi abiti da due giovani nobildonne, al cospetto dellasua corte e dei suoi cavalieri, promette solennemente alsuo Maestro e comandante della Milizia di governaresecondo giustizia, nel rispetto del popolo e delle sueleggi, e chiede a Lui fedeltà e obbedienza in difesa delRegno e del suo operato. In questo nostro viaggio attraverso il Medioevo spiccanoi Balestrieri di Iglesias, primo gruppo di rievocazionestorica in Sardegna creato nel 1998, e i Balestrieri di VillaEcclesiae. Le due associazioni, nella riscoperta della storiadell’antica Villa di Chiesa, importante centro medievaledell’isola, partecipano a due importanti manifestazioni: ilTorneo della Balestra e il Corteo Storico Medievale. Il primo, aperto anche alla partecipazione di gruppinazionali e internazionali, si svolge tra fine luglio e i primigiorni di agosto e s’ispira alla comprovata abilità dei 128balestrieri dell’esercito iglesiente, che difeserostrenuamente la città sino alla morte durante il celebreassedio di Villa di Chiesa messo in atto da Alfonsod’Aragona, detto l’Infante, nel 1323; il secondo, il CorteoStorico Medievale, evento unico nel suo genere, si svolgeil 13 agosto lungo le vie del centro storico e ripropone ipersonaggi dell’antica borghesia medievale.
A Middle Ages which is depicted in all of its magnificence in the“Return to Arborea,” historical re-enactment of the investitureceremony for Eleonora d’Arborea (1340-1404) as Judge of therealm of Arborea. The enactment, which takes places during theSeptember festivities in Oristano, is held every year in the CityHall. The princess and future ruler, after being clothed in herprecious vestments by two young noble dames, in the presenceof her court and her knights, solemnly promises to her Lord andcommander of the Militia to govern according to justice, withrespect to the people and their laws, and ask Him for faithfulnessand obedience in defence of the Kingdom and its works.In this journey of ours through the Middle Ages, the re-enactment group Balestrieri di Iglesias (Crossbow Archers ofIglesias), the first historical re-enactment group created in 1998,as well as the Balestrieri di Villa Ecclesieae (Crossbow Archers ofVilla Ecclesieae), stand apart. The two associations, which arerediscovering the ancient history of Villa di Chiesa, an importantMedieval city on the island, participate in two important events:the Tournament of the Crossbow and the Historical MedievalParade . The former, open also to the participation of national
and international groups, is held between the end of July and thebeginning of August and gets its inspiration from the provenability of 128 cross-bow archers from the Iglesias army, whostrenuously defended the city to the death during the famoussiege of Villa di Chiesa by Alfonso d’Aragona, known as theInfant, in 1323; the latter, the Historical Medieval Parade, a one-of-a-kind event, is held on 13 August along the roads of thehistorical center and includes characters from the Medievalbourgeoisie. Construction and practice of historical archery,creations of lances, striking weaponry (axes, maces, etc.),Medieval hand-to-hand weaponry (swords, broad swords, slings,halberds, etc.), assault and defense machinery and the making ofparchment scroll out of sheep and goat skin are the prerogativeof Sagittari Vagantes, established in 2007 in Iglesias witheducational and experimental purposes, though they alsoparticipate in many historical re-enactments on the island, such asthe Tournament of the Crossbow in Iglesias and in nationwideevents. Looking backwards through time and closing thehypothetical journey we find ourselves in Cagliari, capital ofSardinia, as well as an important crossroads of peoples ofcivilizations. You must have a thirst for knowledge to discover thetreasures found in this city of two faces – popular and aristocratic.In the heart of the historical district Castello, in what was for theSpanish the Calle de Los Palacios, the road of the Genovese, islocated the Associazion dei Cavalieri dell’Antica Locanda(Association of the Knights of the Ancient Inn), a group that isactively participating and organizing numerous historical re-enactments, including the Olimpiaidi Medievali (MedievalOlympics), held October 2008. Protected by solid walls, thecenter holds within its ancient underground a historical Medievalmuseum. 700 sq. meters of exhibits of arms, lances, swords,armor, torture devices that range from antiquity to WWII. Anextremely rare collection of 230 objects that the president of theAssociation, Giovanni Cannas, an enthusiastic history buff, hascollected over years of in-depth research. Research and passionthat we find in the Compagnia Balestrieri Castel di Castro (Casteldi Castro Company of Crossbow Archers), founded in 2003 inCagliari for the purpose of promoting and fostering knowledge
of the historical Medieval city through events and exhibits. But todiscover and immerse oneself in the heart of the Middle Ages andmore, you will have to go to the Museo delle Torri e dei Castellidi Sardegna (Museum of the Towers and Castles of Sardinia), apermanent exhibit of the Monagheddu-Cannas collection,located at the Centro Comunale d’Arte e Cultura “Il Lazzaretto”(The “Lazaretto” City Center of Art and Culture). A miniature world in which it is possible to see the scalereproductions of Nuragic huts, castles, towers and scenes ofSpanish Medieval life and the House of the Savoy; thereconstructions are of the original functions, not of the currentstate of ruin, and realized with materials very similar to theoriginals. Here ends our journey through the times and places ofour memory. Obviously, as with all itineraries that touch uponsuch a vast historical territory, something has been omitted oronly hinted at. There are many projects that are spontaneouslyproposed, even in the smaller towns of the island; projects meantto bridge past to present and to uncover that historical substrateof belonging to own’s one roots. But the journey has no end and,in any case, is not over yet…

Costruzione e pratica del tiro con l’arco storico,realizzazioni di armi in asta, da botta (asce, mazze, ecc.),armi bianche medievali (spade, spadoni, fionde, alabarde,ecc.), macchine da guerra di assedio e difesa e lavorazionedelle pergamene da pelli ovine e caprine, sono inveceappannaggio dei Sagittari Vagantes, nati nel 2007, semprea Iglesias, con intento soprattutto didattico e sperimentale,anche se non manca la loro partecipazione a numeroserievocazioni storiche isolane, tra cui il Torneo della Balestradi tiro con l’arco storico da banco e da braccio a Iglesias, ea eventi di carattere nazionale. In questo percorso a ritroso nel tempo, per chiudere unipotetico itinerario, ci ritroviamo a Cagliari, capoluogosardo e importante crocevia di popoli e civiltà. Bisognaavere sete di conoscenza per scoprire i tesori racchiusi inquesta città dal duplice volto, popolare e aristocratico. Nelcuore dello storico quartiere di Castello, in quella che fuper gli Spagnoli la Calle de Los Palacios, ossia la via deiGenovesi, ha sede l’Associazione dei Cavalieri dell’AnticaLocanda, gruppo attivo nella partecipazione eorganizzazione di numerose rievocazioni storiche, tra lequali si annoverano le Olimpiadi Medievali, svoltesi aCagliari nell’ottobre del 2008. Protetta da solide mura, lasede ospita nei suoi antichi sotterranei un Museo storico-medievale: 700 metri quadrati di esposizione in cuifigurano armi, lance, spade, armature, strumenti di tortura,che spaziano dall’antichità sino alla seconda guerramondiale. Un rarissimo compendio di 230 oggetti che ilpresidente dell’Associazione, Giovanni Cannas,appassionato cultore di storia, ha raccolto in numerosi annidi approfondite ricerche. Ma per scoprire e immergersi nel vivo del
Medioevo e non solo, bisognerà recarsi al Museo delle Torrie dei Castelli di Sardegna, mostra permanente costituitadalla Collezione Monagheddu-Cannas, presente presso ilCentro Comunale d’Arte e Cultura “Il Lazzaretto”. Un mondo in miniatura in cui è possibile ammirarericostruzioni filologiche in scala di capanne nuragiche,castelli, torri e scene di vita medievale spagnola e sabauda,ricostruiti nella loro funzione originale, non in stato dirudere, e realizzati con materiali molto simili agli originali. Finisce qui questo viaggio attraverso i tempi e i luoghi dellanostra memoria. Ovviamente, come tutti gli itinerari chetoccano un così vasto territorio storico, qualcosa è statoomesso o appena accennato. Sono tante le iniziative che sorgono spontanee anche neipiù piccoli centri dell’isola, allo scopo di creare un ponte trapassato e presente e far emergere quel substrato storico diappartenenza alle proprie radici. Ma il viaggio non avrebbefine e, comunque, non è ancora concluso…
